chess knowledge has improved universally, not merely in the opening. this is a function of the explosion in english language chess literature and computer assisted training. I therefore do not accept the premise of your counterargument. Although I can see how a casual player might not need to use this knowledge as much due to the prevalence of shorter time controls which are percieved to have an economic funtion for chess organizers.
