I have been very eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Novag Star Diamond. My wife will let me buy one in a couple of months (after closing on a house and having our finances stablize a little). I've been looking at the PDF of the owners manual of the Diamond II (under the assumption that the main features won't change and the manual for the Diamond II will be similar to the Star Diamond) and have some questions about your computer. If you feel like sharing your thoughts about your computer please do so. It will help everyone to learn what to expect from the new offering. http://www.novag.com/Web%202003/Manual%20download/instructions.htm Do you have to play a 40 moves in 2 hours game for the rating system to work? Does the rating system work if you instead choose the "average response time" of 3 minutes? If you reduce the amount of time the computer thinks, does it rate itself weaker? How does the machine rate itself when you give it an average of 3 minutes? Of 2 minutes? When I play a tabletop, I like to mirror the moves on a real board. If I am playing a tournament time control of 40/120, sometimes I flag on the computer when I still "real" time left, since the computer starts deducting my time right away while I am moving the computer's move and hitting my real clock. That is to say, I always have more time than the computer says I do. My RadioShack computer will allow me to continue playing after I flag, which is important when you mirror your games. Does your DiamondII (or SapphireII) allow you to continue playing? If you are using the rating function and you flag on the computer but not for "real" since you are mirroring the moves, does your game get recorded as a loss for you? To combat this problem, I suppose you could give yourself some more time by changing the time control for yourself, but keep the computer's time the same. This is an option you can do with this computer, based on my reading. Does this change the rating function at all? This is an exciting time to be alive guys, with new computers coming out and all of that stuff. Prost!
