King 3.23 has achieved many very good match results against all the top engines,
at 40/40. No doubt that The King belongs in the same category like Fritz,
Shredder or Tiger.

(Actually I never doubted it...)

The only "secret" (which isn't a secret really) is, that you should use improved
custom personality settings, not the defaults, on up-to-date fast computers.
Kurt's page above offer several of them which are competitive.

Btw. King is (at least) four times Dutch Computer Chess Champion (where usually
Quest = Fritz participated).
