So when (if?) Kasparov plays Ponomariov later this year, how many games are we
going to expect them to play to determine who is the champion and who is
considered "the best player in the world?"

They each have a differing amount of time to prepare, they can each afford a
different level of preparedness, each has different teams of minions to prepare
their opening repertoire/lines of play/strategies, one will be more
tired/pressured than the other.  One will win.

At Leiden each computer team had a differing amount of time to prepare, each
could afford a different level of preparedness, each team had different people
of different skills to prepare the opening repertoire/tune the engine for
strategy, each computer played on differently powered hardware.  One won.
