there are 64 possible squares to move to.
there are 12 kinds of pieces to move to any square (6 of each color)
plus pawn promotions... 5 possible promotions in 16 squares
64*12+ 5*16= 640+128+80= 848 possible chess moves imaginable
or are you discuusing sequences of moves?
