George, Yes, changing the params in wb2uci.eng is fine as long as it's done 'properly'. Otherwise some params will not be sent to the engine. Another drawback to editing wb2uci.eng is that you may find yourself doing it too often with different settings. Some people are using a .txt file format along with an wb2uci.eng option setting, the problem here is that too many of us could not confirm that these .txt files are accessed or loaded. I have used a system file monitor and can confirm that they do not load on my (win98se) computer and one other person has told me the .txt setup does not work for him. (maybe was Mike S.) My only guess is that perhaps it only works with 'some' version of wb2uci.exe. A small group of TheKing fans has worked out a way that we can exchange our settings files for use within the Fritz 8 GUI. Actually it works with all Fritz style GUI that support the Load and Save buttons on the Engine Parameters dialogbox. (Load button is the new thing, older GUI have a Restore button)Generally this became available in the Fritz 8 series GUI. If you are interested in seeing what we have done you may get the files at: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/brian.kostick@sbcglobal.net The files are cm9-wb2uci.zip and optionally, engineparameter.zip which is some converted personality files compliments of Brian T.
