Put some knowledge in the program that would help it avoid blunders in the openings (moving pieces twice, center control, looking for open positions, etc etc). 2. Insert some code to oblige it's opponent to get out of it's book (spurious lateral moves.. moves in two tempo's.. repetition of the same move.. etc etc)
