I fully agree. What was the intention of those people who
assumed this??

Makes sense if a book is properly adapted to the playing style
of the program. This may be the case for Shredder 7.04 under
classic GUI and for the Fritz8 book. But most books are simply
a collection of good games. And you already know: I am more
interested in playing strength of the pure engine than of
the opening books. Hence, I will continue using the good
draw book [remis.ctg] when testing programs in engine/engine
matches. On the other hand I think the influence of a special
book is overestimated. From our experience with the good
remis.ctg we can confirm that Shredder704 has won all matches
we have ever played. I therefore see/saw no negative aspects
for Shredder704 with the remis.ctg instead of its own book.
