Why is >this? What Chessbase calls updates used to be called "patches" -- "patches" are normally correcting programmimg errors. Chessbase also, contrary to most programmimg houses, never provides a datailed release of what the "update" is for -- leaving the user in the dark to "guess" whether or not he needs the update. Is there an added feature? (most likely not), engine improvement? (maybe ), or is some correction in the code for a bug fix ? (most likely IMO). Lokasoft, on the other hand, if they have an error ah -- will usually fix it right away -- publicize on their website and post here -- and there is no doubt for the user whether he needs the patch or not. On the other hand, Lokasoft issued a real update for Deep Sjeng (1.5) and stated on their website exactly what the update was for: " New --- - Stronger engine, about 30-50 ELO improvement. - More intelligent time usage. - Improved, faster searching algorithm. - Added knowledge, especially about some endgames. - Improved Anti-Human mode. - Better default settings. - Jeroen Noomen book (or other ChessPartner books) can be used in WinBoard and UCI mode. - Some new personalities. - Workarounds for ChessBase/Fritz bugs included. - Miscellaneous small bugfixes and enhancements. - ChessPartner 5.3a with new 'teacher' mode shows legal moves. - Fixed bug in 3 fold repetition detection. - Book moves more random. - Mac OS X version of the engine included. This is unsupported. " That is sufficient information for most usera to decide if one want this update or not - I think most people will say "yes", that's a good update. Chessbase's philosophy with respect to "Updates" (and I'm not disrespecting their product at all by this comment -- I think this is more of a management issue that a product issue) is to treat all customers like "mushrooms". Those familiar with how mushrooms are grown commercially will know exactly what I am talking about. You grow mushrooms in the dark in a big pile of manure. Best , Michael
