I played in my privat test only with 2 UCI engines (SOS and Shredder). For me important: WinBoard compatible yes / no If no maybe UCI ... I use: 1. Arena GUI / WinBoard GUI to 50/50 2. ChessBase 7.0 for my interest on databases, in the last times also SCID On my Dual Pentium III 733 MHz system I have also installed different other GUIs, not on my other systems. Best Frank WinBoard is the main, most important and interesting protocol for me! No doubt about it!
