A couple of points.

1. TheKing is certainly still "competitive", since it won Leiden.

2. Johan can't be to blame for not wanting to pay the high entry fee at Graz for
being a commercial chess engine author.

I think you're reading too much into a small set of words. Besides, what is
wrong with retiring? If no further improvements can be made without a major
overhaul, what do you expect him to do?
