You have missed the point/truth behind both statements.

The first one merely says that it is "very difficult to improve the program" and
that IF he starts changing things the program may get weaker. This is true for
ANY commercial program. Johan did not say that he WILL NOT try to improve the
program because it WILL get weaker if he starts changing things.

Secondly, Johan NEVER takes The King to this tournament (the ICGA, I think).
Instead, he takes his Amazons program and simply watches the computer chess
tournament from the calm of the sidelines.

So, absolutely nothing new regarding Johan's intentions with The King can be
determined from either of those statements.
