Going by name alone, I have always assumed that insufficient material is a test
for draw by insufficient mating material (i.e. two kings plus either a bishop, a
knight, or two knights). Random play probably changes the seed value for the
hash keys, different move ordering, or something to that effect, and results in
different moves played where the evaluation is similar. Contempt is the draw
avoidance parameter, i.e. an engine "pretends" that it is up by 1.5 pawns (by
default) when it is doing searches, so that if it finds a draw by perpetual or a
similar draw, it will not play that line unless it is actually down 1.5 pawns.
