No wonder that you had problems if you had not the latest GUI installed.
Shredder 7 is probably by far the best product you can purchase from Chessbase.

+ The Engine is SMP capable
+ There comes a second GUI which is not bad either
+ The updated Engine 7.04 is not only bugfree, it is also considerably stronger
  and also available as UCI engine for other GUIs.
+ The Shredder classic book at tournament mode is supposed to be better than
the broad .ctg-books.

- The Engine is not very good for Analysis. However for that purpose many
  freeware UCI-engines are available. Also CB-native List504 and Crafty19.03.
- The GUI has still some Bugs
