In computer chess every program that is not sold is defined as amteur. Following this definition for humans I thought that every player who does not earn money from chess is an amateur and even players with Fide rating of 2100(that is better than 2100 USCF) usually lose more than they earn from chess. They need to pay money for playing in tournaments and they usually do not win prizes. I do not know what is the starting points that players earn money from chess but I guess that it is a lot more than 2100 and I do not count the fact that they could earn money by doing other things instead of playing chess but only compare playing chess with staying at home and doing nothing on the same time from money point of view. Staying at home means that you do not lose the money that you need to pay in order to play in a tournament and it includes paying for traveling to the place of the tournament and paying entry fee to the organizers of the tournament.
