Subject: Testposition. Is e5 really the best?

Author: George Tsavdaris

This is from Chessmaster's classic games:

In the following position from a game between chess engines
Belle Vs Chess -1979, and after 44.e5 the annotator for Chessmaster said:
"A fine pawn sacrifice which produces a powerful passed d-pawn."

And indeed after 44.e5 if 44...Bxe5 then 45.Nxe5 dxe5 and white is
winning due to the passed d-pawn.
But the few engines i tried (Shredder7.04 / Fritz8.00.8 D-Junior8/ZX /
Chess Tiger 15.0ga) don't play 44.e5 because after this instead of
44...Bxe5 they play 44...Rxc4. The game after 44...Rxc4
looks drawn to me but after long analysis seems it is a win for white
(Rook Vs Knight in the endgame).
So indeed 44.e5 maybe the best but not for the reason the annotator
said. Because after the Rxc4 there is no passed pawn.
Most programs here prefer 44.Qxb3 with a big score, that is steadily
decreasing.
So what is the best move after all? Any program finds e5?
