This my favorite and it is proably the best known and most written about computer vs human game ever. I still have an original whole page article that written by the NY Times Bruce Weber (May 13th, 1997 pg 22) on this game which included 9 position diagrams. When was the last time the NY Times published a chess game with 9 position diagrams. Immediately after the match, both Anatoly Karpov (then ICF World Champion)and Susan Polgar (Woman's World Champion) both offered to play DB in a match. Karpov said his positonal style of play would be more highly suited against DB ( I agree with him on this point.) Karpov also stated that 34...f6 was a terrible move and after 34. ..f6 Black was dead. The obvious Qb6 allows black counterplay. In hindsight, Karparov was "thinking" Deep Blue would play Qb6 and he would have had counterplay. Deep Blue failed low with Qb6 went into "panic mode" and ended up playing 36.axb5. A much better move than Qb6 in many GM's eyes. 36.axb5 axb5 37.Be4 Rxa2 38.Qxa2 Qd7 39.Qa7 Rc7 40.Qb6 Rb7 41.Ra8+ Kf7 42.Qa6 Qc7 43.Qc6 Qb6+ 44.Kf1 Rb8 45.Ra6 0-1 [d]1r6/5kp1/RqQb1p1p/1p1PpP2/1Pp1B3/2P4P/6P1/5K2 b - - 0 45 45. ..Qe3 draws is the GM opinion To add salt to the wound, it turned out that Kasparov resigned a drawn game (according to the experts -- not me). A pivotal game, that impacted the history of Computer Chess and the first "full" game ever published by Chess Informant that was won by a computer (along with Game 6 - which was just an awful game by Kasparov with a blunder on the 7th move - 7...h6.)
