I couldn't believe it at first when Marcus informed me, Elvis death? simply unbelievable as he was much to young to die, what a terrible day. Elvis wasn't his real name, his real name was Detlef Pordzik but since he was a true lover of Elvis Presley he liked it when people called him Elvis, or just El. His love and passion for Elvis Presley had no limits, for his living he owned a bar completely dedicated and arranged in style to the king of rock and roll. One thing for sure, Elvis wasn't the normal average typical guy. Coming from the back streets where he was a feared "street fighter" he was able to escape from that milieu and make something from his life. Computer chess and his bar were 2 important pillars in his life. I have met him during the Paderborn tournaments and his outfit and appearance was truly amazing. Wearing himself complete in black leader clothes, long hair from the 60's, a knife in a sheath quite visible, not someone you would like to meet in a dark alley at 3:00 AM. But sometimes things aren't what they look at first glance and Elvis was such an exception. Under that coarse aura a very intelligent, sensitive and tender person was hiding. Elvis was a man of the first hour, he like many of us experienced it all, from the first Fidelity all the way to the latest Fritzies 8.0.0.4.7.1.33a.x.y.z. Elvis was a frequent writer for "Rochade Europe" a german chess magazine with over 60,000 subscribers, together with Marcus Kästner he successfully ran his own computer chess magazine, ChessBits. Elvis also was a beta tester for Rebel and Chess Tiger for many years, various well written reviews are still on the old web site after being published first in "Rochade Europe". I will miss you El, even though most of our contact went via email, our conversations and especially their warmth I will never forget. Goodbye my old friend. Ed
