I agree with your reasoning and I certainly agree with your desire to own
optimal engines on whatever hardware I want to run the engines on without having
to shell out $150 for both engines.  Having said that there are certainly (at
least perceived) financial disincentives for the engine authors to do this.

If I have to choose I like Shredder's approach of offering an SMP engine at the
normal price because I almost always use an SMP system.  But it would be nice to
know that it's running at optimal speeds even with one thead because I do limit
the engines to one thread a piece when running engine matches.
