Peter, That'd be great if you'd try again! :) I actually had some ideas about how someone might go about doing this. I was thinking that it might be interesting if the computer allowed the human to get a pawn up during the opening or middlegame, but then played full force in late middle game and endgame. Perhaps the alpha beta loop could be modified so that instead of seeking to maximize the computer's advantage, the computer would instead seek a score of say, -150. Once the late middle game is reached, the computer would go back to full force. This would let most players obtain and early advantage (which is very exciting, and could be either positional or material), and then they can see if they can hold on to it. This would also probably produce more draws, which might keep the program from heading to 2200 or 2300 even if it's getting 1 point at a time. I don't know if it's possible to do this, and perhaps it would even be necessary to restrict the search. Whatever you decide to do, I really appreciate you saying you'd try to create such an opponent. :) Roger
