Piece square tables are the easiest way to make a simple, material-only program into a better program. It will run almost as fast as material-only, and it will pay more sensible moves. You can encourage castling, control of the center, and so on. You can have diferent tables for the opening, middlegame, and endgame, so you can have major influence over the entire game.
