Without opening books, they are crippled quite a bit. Some might play exactly the same moves. I saw a program that liked the dragon if you deleted the opening book. Same thing, over and over. Of course, once you figure out what it is going to do, and how to defeat it, what fun is there in that? I'll bet there are programs that will almost never play the same thing, book or no book.
