when hiarcs moved from 5 to 6
and fritz moved from 5 to 5.32,
it was a response to the existence of 32 bit operating systems. eg it was driven
by outside technology, not marketing cycle.
If customers become accustomed to a marketing cycle then they could feel ripped
off when they are compelled to pay for change too soon, such persons would
expect an upgrade.
So long as Maasticht type events happen every year-- and engines are changed for
competetive purposes-- one can be fairly certain that commercial programmers
will use the publicity attendant upon these and man-computer matches (
underwritten by FIDE and Emirates and dot.coms) as an opportunity to hawk their
wares each year.
Isn't playchess' free year per purchase policy a pretty solid clue of this?
