Subject: Rebel10 "welcome tournament" game 1

Author: Dirk Frickenschmidt

Just like in the case of Junior5, I'd like to welcome the new Rebel10 with a
little welcome tournament.
All 10 tournament games (40/120), two games each with white and black against
top programs, are played on two 200MMX machines with 64Mb each.

The Slav opening followed Yussupov-Nogueiras (Belford 1988) to move 15.
Then Rebel with its first move out of book played a theoretical novelty, and a
sound one!

At first sight, it looks quite dangerous for white to keep the queen unguarded
in the line of the black rook c8. Fritz5 first tried to keep its knight on e4
with 16...Qd5, waiting for 17.Nd2 Nxd2 =.

But Rebel10 continued with the strong move Ne5! At this point Fritz5 still
calculated that the following 17...c5, opening the c-file, would keep the game
balanced. But after 14.Nc4 its evaluation dropped, finally seeing that there
would be no sufficient compensation for exchanging a black rook to knight plus
pawn. Whatever tactical manoevering Fritz tried then, Rebel10 always found the
right decisions (like keeping the queen pawns and giving the central d-pawn
before), and after exchange of the black rook the endgame was won for white. If
anyone has doubts about the position after move 46 he can tell me how he thinks
black could escape the loss. But there is definitely no chance.

Rebel10 showed consideable positional skill in this game (16.Bd3, 16.Ne5! for
example) and Fritz, misjudging the position after leaving book, was not able to
counter this with tactical shots, though trying exactly this by all means even
with reduced material. Nice game.

Once more: these little "welcome tournaments" have not much statistical
relevance.
But they *do* show some characteristics of a new program while playing against
some strong opponents. So please have a look at the content of the games rather
than only at the outcome.

Regards
from Dirk
