You could have various tasks you have to complete, and at the end of each task, you have to beat some guy in chess in order to get whatever you're trying to get. Maybe the higher you progress in the chess world, the more political influence you have (which is the case in some places). You'd have to win tournaments to get money to buy cooler weapons and equipment. As the game goes on, the opponents become harder. You could use the results against previous opponents to get an estimate of how good the player is, then adjust future opponents accordingly to make it difficult and challenging to advance in the game, but not impossible (IE don't make level 5 full, unleashed Fritz, because then 0.000001% of the population can make it to level 6). It might be an interesting way to get kids to improve their chess. For parents who force chess on their kids (which makes it seem like work, not fun), this could make it fun to learn, since you're playing a game to improve your game playing :)
