A couple of years ago I ran Crafty with tablebases vs Crafty without tablebases to see if the tablebases helped any. It was only 200 games and the Crafty with tablebases came out ahead by a slim margin indicating that tablebases might be worth 10-20 Elo points. This time I used Fritz 8 w/wo tablebases and after 166 games Fritz with tablebases is about 10 Elo points ahead (85.5-80.5). Still probably not enough games for a definitive answer but another indication that tablebases have a very minimal effect on strength if the program has decent endgame stuff to begin with. All games were on 2 XP2400+ machines using auto232 and ALL 3/4/5 men tablebases. Call me stubborn but I still prefer tablebases over no tablebases. Jim
