Nope, no problem here on my G4 400Mhz:

crafty19.3 xboard-4.2.6: 119 knps
crafty19.3 textmode: 115 knps

Free-Sjeng-11.1 xboard:  69 knps
Free-Sjeng-11.1 terminal: 68 knps

hexchess xboard: 159 knps
hexchess terminal: 151 knps

Did you compile xboard with
./configure --host=ppc-apple-bsd --enable-zippy
make
