Then all of a sudden we have a top program that can beat the > commercials, beat most all non-commercial programs, and can place very high > in tournaments posted at CCC. What would be the advantage for a programmer to > release a version of the same program in another name using another > programmers name, and sell it to the public---money? testing? first: testing if he does not know yet if a new approach is really good... after that: think about the possibility that Joe has a contract that gives it's partners the exclusive rights to sell all <X> he produces - but he is not very happy with his partner anymore... after that he names it <Y>, gave it to Moe and sells it as <Y> to another company after it has produced many big headlines in the amateur-circuit... But it's a mind experiment (one that I have heard already - sometimes computerchess produces strange rumours...) - I don't think that it has happened in the past or will happen in the future... But I know that some think different... we all have our opinions... Greets, Thomas
