After reading his book "Pioneer" i would say he was a programmer. How would you call shannon ? But there is Julio Kaplan. He was world champion. ok - he was young at this time. he is 53 today. but i doubt that you will find any other chess programmer with a title. http://www.atarimagazines.com/v4n3/ComputerChess.html World Junior Champions compiled by Kelly Atkins 1988 Joel Lautier France 1987 Viswanathan Anand India 1982 Andrey Sokolov USSR 1980 Garry Kasparov USSR 1979 Yasser Seirawan USA 1977 Artur Yusupov USSR 1974 Anthony Miles England 1973 Alexander Beliavsky USSR 1969 Anatoly Karpov USSR 1967 Julio Kaplan Puerto Rico 1955 Boris Spassky USSR ------------------ Kaplan, Julio K, *25.07.1950, USA --------------------- In a recent experiment International Master Julio Kaplan was required rapidly to add numbers presented to him audibly at the rate of about one number per second, while at the same time playing five-second-a-move chess against a slightly weaker, but master level, player. Even with his analytical mind completely occupied with the addition,Kaplan more than held his own against the master in a series ofgames. Deprived of the time necessary to see problems or construct plans, Kaplan still produced fluid and coordinated play.
