The difference is that it would be folly for a company to modify an outdated
version for no extra cost for selling a few extra copies. Your example is a
separate product of the latest engine. Presumably to reach a wider audience with
the Shredder brand. That makes sense from a commercial viewpoint. As for
customer stupidity. Like I said before, the idea of purchasing the latest
single-cpu version of J8 and receive a slightly outdated SMP version for free is
absurd. Chessbase has never been a charitable organisation or offered
spectacular consumer benefits. The neverending GUI supply and the Chessbase
server are good examples.

The case is unfortunate and there might be a way to get the money back. However,
I don't think it's worth the attention it's getting. Here nor anywhere else.
It's a discussion between Chessbase and their dissatisfied customers. Not a
spamming object here.
