Bruce has created a great website
(http://www.brucemo.com/compchess/programming/) which is one of the best
introductions to computer chess. I don't remember how many people I have
referred to that website, but the figure is definitely above one hundred (most
of them in our CS dept).

He has also published Gerbil, an open source chess engine. Even though I have
never got the chance to closely examine Gerbil's code, I am certain that it is a
great contribution to the computer chess community. In general, publishing an
open source program is far greater contribution to computer chess than
publishing a commercial state-of-the-art engine.

As to Bruce's reasons for not publishing Ferret, you can visit
http://www.brucemo.com/compchess/ferret/index.htm. Besides that, it is none of
anyone's business. Bruce has already proved that he does care a lot about the
improvement of computer chess.
