Even as a lower class tournament player I remember going over my favorite English Opening, Orthodox Defense (Lasker Variation), or Caro-Kann Defense racking my brains trying to remember every variation I might run into. At the professional level it must be maddening. The strange paradox is computer chess may actually be the stimulus that kills classical chess as the mainstream popular form. Now that even grandmasters are starting to be dominated by desktop computer programs what is there left to be accomplished? Computers may very well prove to be just as dominating in FRC as Classical chess but at least the computers will have to start at an even playing field without storing millions of opening moves that would be impossible for any human to memorize in order to avoid falling into a trap or some huge disadvantage before move 10. I'm sure classical chess will always be played but I sense FRC will replace it sometime in the future. The real losers will be the publishers of Openings Manuals. One question. How long will it be before an opening manual is published on Fischer Random Chess Openings (FRCO 1)?
