I know of several engines that are developed in Linux (and then ported to
Windows).  Such as Ruffian, SOS, Deep Sjeng.  gcc means portability so that, for
instance, Ruffian's author can use his Mac when he wishes to or simply switch to
the Windows XP machine etc.  The same is with other programmers.  I just read
that  Postmodernist does the same.  Linux is an excellent environment for
developing chess programs and it is very stable.  It is much stabler than ANY
version of Windows (in my opinion).
