I recall Bob Hyatt saying a while back (on the newsgroup rgcc) that one of the things he had to take account of in moving from Cray Blitz to Crafty was the relatively slow memory bandwidth of PC-class machines. I think one of the most significant improvements of the G5 is the huge increase in bus speed - it runs at half the speed of the CPU. This might enable some improvements in Crafty.
