I taught myself to program in Basic and wrote my chess program in that language
for the Radio Shack TRS-80 computer. Later I rewrote in the Quick Basic and then
compiled it. I don't know what an 'amature' program is but mine should be rated
between 1800 and 2000 elo.
When I first started to write the program I had no idea on how to start such a
task so I just wrote a bunch of subroutines. When they were all written all I
had to do was create a 'driver' and it was done. A number of improvements over
the years have made it much stronger than the one-ply that I started with.
