amateur - A person who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity
as a pastime rather than as a profession.

I think that is the category that most of us fall into :) Basically everyone who
can't support themselves from the sales of their chess program. Of course, it is
also possible (and likely) that the professional chess programmers also enjoy
their efforts very much (i.e. as a "pastime").
