In the late 70ies, I learned Basic on Commodore PET, later on other Commodore
Computers, like VC20. Mid-80ies I learned Fortran mainly on PDP 11 (I even used
punch cards at that time, but that was not on PDP 11, I forgot the name of that
computer). 1986 I learned C on Atari ST ("my" first computer. Three students
living together bought and used it together. BTW. Last I heard - only few years
ago - that Atari was still "living".). This was while I was studying chemistry.
1989 I had access to many different computers. I did numerical simulations
(quantum mechanics) using mainly C, sometimes Fortran. Soon I also started to
program the conduction of some experiments in physical chemistry. At that time,
I also learned x(3)86 assembler, and some Z80 assembler.
Besides one course at university (in Fortran), I have no formal education in
programming. I am no professional programmer.

Dieter
