There is a difference between a text board like the above, and what I understand
as an asii board. An ascii board, as I understand the term, is a chessboard made
up of ascii characters, which include many non-text characters, even some simple
graphics characters if you have extended ascii. In my program I display the
board using these characters on a 50x80 character screen, the board occupying
about 3/4 of the screen. I use colour, so there is no problem of light and dark
squares. The pieces are not just characters, but actual chess-piece symbols made
up of many blocks, down to a resolution of 1/2 a screen character. While not
being as nice as, say, the Xboard/Winboard diagram, it is certainly easy to see
exactly what's what. It is even possible to include details like a cross on the
bishops and the eye for the knights at this resolution. I have seen far worse
computer boards at any rate, and it is certainly much better than anything else
I have seen using just text. It took a long time working out the patterns for
each piece, but I did it ages ago for a DOS (text mode) version of my program,
and I just kept on using it ever since.

Best wishes,
Roberto
