I guess there will be no 64 Bit - program until summer or maybe even autumn
2004. First tests indicate however that chess programs will benefit a lot from
the new opterons and all bitboard-based engines will profit a lot from the new
64-Bit architecture. But I doubt that in the upcoming World Computer Chess
Championship in November this year any engine will run on opterons. Commercial
programmers will only bother to sell a 64-Bit - Version if there is significant
demand for such a version. This will only be the case, when there is a
64-Bit-Windows and the workstation version of the opteron. Both will probably
introduced this year but it will take time that a significant number of
consumers have such systems.
