Some posts indicate, that even in 32-Bit-Mode an Opteron performs very well for
chess and is the fastest possible system today. Anyway I would wait until the
Athlon 64 comes out in September, since these processors will be cheaper than
the opterons, but for chess probably as fast as Opterons.
I would also wait, until AMD brings an Athlon 64 with 2 GHz which will be
probably the case this year.
Of course if you have an Opteron/Athlon64-system you will benefit from the
introduction of 64-Bit-Chessengines in either case (buying now or later).
