I am of a very similar background to Jon Dart, but bow down respectfully in
homage to Arasan :)

I used my first PC when I was 18 (a Commodore PET), did some FORTRAN at
university (theoretical physics degree) then programmed in it, csh and C for a
couple of years. Then I became a systems architect and wrote not one jot or
tittle of code, apart from the odd Word or Excel macro, from then until now (11
years) at work.

After bad experiences with Linux, to some regret, I went back to Windows, taught
myself Visual C++ (very interesting - the world has turned through 180 degrees
since I last wrote code) and have decided to start a chess engine which will be
called "thebrix".

I have the suspicion that, like Botvinnik's (mythical?) program, thebrix will be
"in the design phase" for N years ;)
