They are completely different products. Compare DeepSjeng (rather) with something like Gandalf, Ruffian, or Nimzo. The ChessMaster product is nice for what it does. I hate the 3-D stuff, but I can customize that away. If I want to play online, I will use Winboard. And I can even use TheKing engine to play through Winboard if I choose. That does not mean that I don't like CM or that CM is less valuable than Winboard. I have a bazillion free engines and I like all of them. When I am tired of getting blasted by Crafty, I will take my revenge against a weak sibling like Golem or ChadsChess. I have Rebel, Hiarcs, Chess Tiger and Bookup. I like all of them. I have Chess Assistant and I love it, but I still fool around with SCID a lot. In short, it's an embarassment of riches. I can't think of any chess software product that rankled me (except for one, and that was my own fault, so I won't mention it).
