For the black pawns, how about using "#" - it is "black" and
sort of round (octagonal). Here this would be:
-------------------
8 | . . . . . . . . |
7 | . . . . . B o . |
6 | . . . . # . . . |
5 | . . . . . . o # |
4 | . b . k . # . . |
3 | . . . . . K . . |
2 | . . . . . . . . |
1 | . . . . . . . . |
-------------------
a b c d e f g h
In a more complex position:
-------------------
8 | . q . . . r k . |
7 | r . . # . # # . |
6 | # . n Q # . . # |
5 | . # . . . . . . |
4 | . . . . . . . . |
3 | . B . . . . . . |
2 | o o . . . o o o |
1 | . . R R . . K . |
-------------------
a b c d e f g h
