They allow you to connect more CPU's together for larger SMPs or to connect the CPUs to I/O. You *could* make a two way with two HT links between them using the 8XX processors instead of one the 2XX processors, and while that might help with a lot of floating point scientific applications that bottleneck on memory bandwidth, it's not going to affect the performance of chess engines - which don't.
