How do you come to the conclusion about the 18 plies with HTs? To me it looks
clear, that HTs can save some plies here. How many may depend on many detail of
HT implementation, and the size of HTs. And also other things. So more or less a
luck factor. Also, it probably would be no good idea, to overtune HT methods for
this position. I think, the position might be good for one thing: with working
HTs and "normal" search, the engine should solve this very fast. If not,
something probably is broken, or the author made some delibarate choice (say
some aggressive pruning), that prevents a fast solution.
