Here's a board that I like:

        White    Black
King      k        K
Queen     q        Q
Rook      r        R
Bishop    b        B
Knight    n        N
Pawn      o        x

7  .   .   . b x
6    .   . o .   .
5  .   .   .   x o
4    B   K   o   .
3  .   .   . k .
2    .   .   .   .

The white pieces are lighter in colour than the dark ones, that's why they get
the lower case letters (less of the character cell is filled).  The pawns look
white too :)  the 'x' as a black pawn is okay, @ is an alternative.  A dark
bullet would be best, of course.

The checkerboard pattern is also present, so it's easy to see diagonal moves.  I
think this is important for an ascii board, just as it's important for a real
one.
