Crafty does this, and I am sure others do this too.  You can set Crafty to
search at a certain depth (perhaps maybe depth of 1 or 3 for your grandson) and
it will play the move like it normally would.  You could also disable the
opening book so he won't move so quickly in the beginning.  If you go to Hyatt's
FTP I believe he has some documentation on it.
