Hi Ricardo,

agreed - this function must really be a optimization hotspot.
Anyway, i would suppress a switch with an additional memory lookup like Uri
suggested:

 switch ( i=smallestpower[number] )

because the "higher" cases need less affort than the "lower" ones.
