This is yet another area that will vary a lot with each program. Tinker almost never does better with the dual table approach (depth preferred and always replace), and often does quite a bit worse. Near as I can tell from reading the studies on this, which are pretty old, with more than about 512K _entries_ it really does not matter very much. However, there are big differences when the number of entries (by today's main memory standards) is relatively small.
