It's always difficult to prove or disprove comparisons made between different
players at different periods in time. Any Elo list (or graph) should show the
current strengths of players, because everybody has ups and downs in their
careers. I'm 100% certain that when Fischer was at his peak, 30 years ago, he
played stronger than Kasparov did at the time. I'm also 100% certain that on
today's date, July 9th 2003, Kasparov playes better than Bobby Fischer. But if I
made a claim about whether Kasparov at his peak could win a tournament against
Fischer at his peak -- and I admit that I do have an opinion on the subject --
it would be a controversial claim that would only lead to a flaming war in this
forum.
